My Top 5 Comics Of 2017
Hey guys from Planet-M, this week we’ll be doing another Top 5 List on the subject of comics, but this time it will be centred on which comics I thought were the best in the previous year, 2017. To get on this list the comic doesn’t have to new, it could be a certain part of an on-going series or a new title.
Now before I get started I’m just gonna admit what I think in my own opinion of comics in 2017, I don’t think 2017 was a good year for comics, don’t get me wrong I think that there were some really good comics with good story’s and terrific artwork, but it felt for every good issue and event we had at least 6 other issues and events that were just bad (thank you, Marvel), what hasn’t helped is Marvel’s mass production of different titles (seriously there are 3 titles at the moment for Guardians of the Galaxy, one is enough because it is the team we are interested in) and all too many events that have (already) overworked artists and writers stretched thin.
Just a reminder, this list is based on my own personal opinion and if you think that some comics should be on this list or if you have any suggestions for future blogs then please leave them in the comments below.
5: X-Men: Blue
Why: After X-Men Prime did a good job at giving the team a fresh start I decided to read at least two of the new prints for the X-Men, X-Men Gold and X-Men Blue and I have to say that Blue is the better title, not only is Cullen Bunn’s writing an improvement over what came before in All New X-men, but the artwork by Jorge Molina and Matteo Buffagani is not only expressive, but energetic. This comic is truly a return to form for this X-Men team as they go on adventures across the world and are mentored by an experienced Mutant, Magneto.
4: Doom Patrol
Why: I will admit I knew nothing of the doom patrol other than a few episodes of Teen Titans were Beast Boy once a part of it, but I have to say it’s quite interesting, the comic feels like a mix between X-Men and those Hannah Barbara cartoons that involved monsters, while at the same time embraces an almost crazy spirit of adventure, all that brought to life through Gerard Way’s Writing and Nick Derington’s artwork.
3: Jean Grey
Why: I will admit I have read a lot of X-Men books, but throughout the run it never really felt like Jean Grey even had a character considering many of the greatest events happen because of her, but with this comic she has a genuine character and has a lot of personality that makes her likable and relatable, the comic develops her character well and does a great job at setting up her new role in the latest X-Men book, X-Men: Red.
2: Seven To Eternity
Why: I’m not going to give too much away on this mostly because you should go and read it, it’s that good, it has great artwork and a creative story, combining sci-fi, mysticism and also has a lot of the western genre it is as well. Seriously pick up this book, if not for the story than for the gorgeous art work.
1: The Might Thor
Why: Earlier I gave Marvel a hard time for producing a few bad comics, but I will admit it’s done some good ones and I can definitely say that this serious became even more epic at this point Thor was fighting against the gods of the shi’ar and defending asgard from the Phoenix Force, this storyline truly felt like an epic space opera with Jason Aaron’s tremendous writing and Russell Dauterman’s beautiful artwork still surprising me with how epic each scene can be, still showing me that even then Marvel was still capable of producing something good.
And with that the Top 5 is concluded if you have any suggestions for titles that should have been on the list please leave them in comments down below and I am going to be taking a break from the blogs for a while, just until I can get some important work completed. Thank You For Reading.
