My Top 10 Live Action Shows Based On Comics
Hey guys from Planet-M, this week I decided to put together a poll based on what I thought you the readers would want, well the most popular was a Top 10 list of live action shows based on comics and by the end I hope the list is to your liking, so let’s get started on My Top 10 of Live Action Shows Based on Comics.
Just a disclaimer, all this is based on my own personal opinion and if there is a show that you wanted on the list please place in the comments down below.
10: Sabrina the Teenage Witch
Why: I have to admit that I grew up watching this series and I absolutely loved it, the fact that it was a fantasy sitcom really helped with the comedy, considering that this show originated from Archie comics, so the “not as planned” antics of the main characters worked with it. The show aired at a time when sitcom acting happened to be good and frankly I laugh every time I hear Nick Bakay voice Salem the Cat, but the best part of this show is that there is actually progression with the characters, the characters grow up and learn new things as time goes, the show moves from high school to college and then to living in world.
9: Luke Cage
Why: Luke cage was a great show from the Marvel Netflix, cool actions, compelling characters and a story that kept me invested, Luke’s character was written like the kind of hero you could have a beer with, a really friendly and likeable guy. I will admit that its only major flaw was that the show dragged on a little during episodes, but other than that I’m glad I watched it.
8: Supergirl
Why: This show came out when I was starting to see the formula of most of the arrow-verse and did a good job at trying more light hearted stories, while trying to also mix the dark elements of the arrow-verse, when superman shows up he never out shines super girl and that’s what I love the most about this show it is all about her, the show stands on its own and is one of the better CW shows. I also like the fact that there is finally an adaptation on the legion of superheroes into the arrow-verse as well as I am a fan of that team and I’m glad that this was the show where they made their appearance.
7: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Why: I will admit that the first season had a problem, its didn’t really know what it wanted to be at first, but I have to admit I liked the first season and all the other seasons after it with better acting, compelling stories and likeable original characters who all go through development, here’s an example, in season 1 a character by the name of Leo Fitz was basically the teams scientific engineer who builds the equipment, he wasn’t the first guy to jump into action and he definitely couldn’t handle a weapon, by season 5 he’s a space cowboy bad ass saving his friends from Kree soldiers. The show goes into many parts of the marvel universe such as Sci-Fi spies of Shield VS Hydra, the other worldly envoirment of the Kree and the Inhumans and even to the demonic powers of the Ghost Rider. The first season is ok, but if you can get passed it, then you’ve got a great show to watch.
6: The Gifted
Why: Well for one its one of the few properties in the x-men franchise that shows a more in depth look at the harshness of the world that mutants live in with social and political commentary, with an on the run story that keeps you guessing on what’s going to happen next while never feeling like its dragging, good character development and great acting. My only problem with the show is that we are basically following these two teenagers as they are going through what is the harshness of being a mutant and we do get development from that, but it mostly comes from the human parents and how they are dealing with it, but still a good first season with interesting characters from the comics like Blink, but also intriguing original characters like Eclipse.
5: Lucifer
Why: I know it’s not a complete adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel of the same name (it more takes inspiration from it), but it does enough good things to both entertain and stand on its own, Tom Ellis’s performance brings a cheeky, egotistical, but likable charm to Lucifer and in the end you find yourself actually routing for the devil. The show knows when to have fun and when to take itself serious and that’s the best kind of show.
4: Smallville
Why: I’ve always liked comics that go back to superman as he was learning to control his powers, discovering more about his origins, helping people along the way and with all the drama that comes with it, now I will admit that Smallville went for a while, but the overall series did a good job at humanising the man of steel and giving him attributes that we could all relate to and in the end the Arrow-verse wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the success of this show.
3: Arrow
Why: Well I talked about Smallville, so let’s talk about what happened after it, Arrow is probably one of the best live action comic book shows, not only is the action impressive, but the first 2 season are the gold standard of how to a compelling story that both delves into the origin of the main character and show how it comes back to haunt him.
2: Jessica Jones
Why: This show was definitely a gritty and realistic look into the MCU, with Krysten Ritter’s performance as the title character the best part and especially when she interacts with David Tenant’s composed, but sadistic Killgrave (AKA The Purple Man), this show is a thriller that you must watch.
1: Legion
Why: Now this is the mutant TV series I’ve been waiting for, a psychological thriller which not only goes into the life and struggles of one of the most powerful mutants, but delves into the workings of various psychological disorders in many surreal ways, such as in one scene where he’s learning to push the voices out of his head due to his telepathy, he imagine himself in front of a giant radio and turns it down as a representation of him gaining control of his telepathy. The acting is all good especially on the part of villain of the series and it’s an intriguing story that goes deep into the mind itself.
