4 Things I loved about Thor Ragnarok
Hey guys from Planet-M, a few months ago I decided to put together a blog on the then recent film, Thor Ragnarok, detailing what I liked about it so far from things like the trailers and what I thought the film was going to be about.
So, now I think there’s been enough time since the film’s release for me to talk about what I liked about it for this week’s blog without the worry of spoilers. So let’s get started on 4 Things I liked about Thor Ragnarok. Just a reminder that all of this based on my own personal opinion and if you didn’t like the film that’s all right.
4: They followed-through with Ragnarok
Why: For a while I was beginning to think that Marvel films were taking fewer risks, with Civil War it felt that the Avengers had been torn apart, but despite they were still doing what they were already doing they just had to be more quiet about it. I realised I was wrong once I got to the end of Thor Ragnarok, I thought yeah Hela and Surter may wind up destroying each other, but Asgard can still be rebuilt, Korg even makes a joke about that just before it is completely and utterly destroyed and I have to say I like this because they’ve changed the status quo of their universe to a large degree.
Thor can no longer travel across the vast realms now that the bi-frost is gone, the power that protected all the realms is gone and thus chaos will ensue and many Asgardians are now left without a home planet and must now seek a new home on earth. I almost thought that something was gonna come in at the last minute and save Asgard or even rebuild it after it was destroyed, but they stuck to what the title was about and gave us the end of Asgard and if there is any future Thor Films I hope that they have a film about Thor and his people dealing with aftermath of this.
3: Homage to Jack Kirby
Why: Jack Kirby is one of the most influential artists in the comic book industry, so when I finally saw his work being fully adapted into the planet Sakaar for Thor Ragnarok I was very excited to it see it and it was incredible how they took the works of Jack Kirby and made it apart of the planet, it was like looking at one of Kirby’s art books come to life with his signature patterns and vibrant colours.
2: Thor and Loki’s Character Development
Why: What has been a long standing part of the Thor trilogy is the relationship between Thor and his adopted brother Loki, how the two are constantly fighting with one another as Thor believes that there is still good in him and all Loki wishes to do is rule because he believes that he is the superior of the two brothers, but I immediately knew that things were going to be different for the two the second that Loki was back in the picture and he was not fighting with Thor.
Unlike in the first Thor film, the Avengers or Thor the Dark World the two brothers have developed to the point where their problems are worked out vocally, the two talk to each other like they are brothers and are capable of finally get through to one another because at this point they are on equal ground as Thor finally sees things from Loki’s point of view as he now sees through the lies of the past as his brother once did.
The two of them by the end come full circle as characters with Loki choosing to stay with his brother and his people and is even willing to take a leap of faith and go back to earth by the end on the slim chance that he may be able to live in peace.
I will note that from the Infinity War trailer it looks like Loki is joining Thanos and saving his own skin, but my guess is that Loki is basically playing the long-con, deceiving Thanos and keeping up his end of the deal by giving Thanos the Tesseract in order to save his people and yes himself at the same time. Now from the trailer it does look like the asgardians are dead, but for all we know they could just be an illusion as Loki is capable of tricking powerful beings with his own magic.
1: Hulk is a character:
Why: The Hulk is one of my favourite comic book characters, especially in the films, but one of my problems with the films is that focus on the Hulk and even character arcs that focus on him in the MCU have not given him much in terms of character, he is basically just a chaotic battle suit that Banner puts on whenever he has to fight. The Hulk has a very interesting character to him, he’s powerful, but misunderstood creature that can be capable of great empathy and is very much like a child. We only see that once in the MCU with one scene in the Incredible Hulk, where the Hulk and Betty Ross are hiding in a cave in the middle of a lightning storm.
But once I saw Hulk talking in the Thor Ragnarok trailer I knew that there was going to be something different about the Hulk and that he was going to be given arc, he is shown exactly the way he is in the comics capable of great rage, but can be very childish in his personality, you finally see that the Hulk is not a terrifying monster, but just a big kid having a temper tantrum. The interactions with Thor are my favourite parts of the film from start to finish and I can’t wait to see his character arc continue from Avengers Infinity War to Avengers 4.
And with that I would like to say that I really liked this movie and Director Taika Waititi did a good job from the story, to the comedy, to the characters themselves, I have to say this was definitely the best Thor film in the trilogy and if Thor ever shows up in future Marvel Films I hope Taika Waititi is directing. Thank You for Reading.
