Top 5 DC Sidekicks

Hey everyone from Planet-M. This week’s Top list will be on a subject that started in popularity, but slowly began fade over time, sidekicks. We all know what sidekick’s are, a young protégé who aids and grants assistance to the hero, but in the modern day of comics the concept has really not been used that often.

In DC we still have characters like Robin and now with DC Rebirth we have a new Kid Flash (who is being trained by the Flash), but other than that whenever we see a young hero they are usually their own independent hero, with almost no connection to other heroes other than in name, but despite that I have read many storylines that have featured sidekicks in DC and today I am giving you a list of my 5 favourite Sidekicks in the DC Universe.

5. Damian Wayne - Robin

Why: Originally I didn’t like this character, but as I read more of Batman, Batman and Robin, Teen Titans and Super Sons I began to find him an interesting character, the actual blood son of Batman raised by the league of assassins, now that is a cool concept to work with and I was surprised that it wasn’t done sooner, his interactions with Batman I find both cool and hilarious as Damian considers them on equal footing and yes in some cases they are. I’ve really liked the characters development as of DC Rebirth as he is acting more and more like a rebellious teen as he assembles his own team of Titans and even brings Superboy in on his adventures in Super Sons, in the end I’ve grown to like this character and I look forward to where DC Rebirth may take him.

4. Roy Harper - Speedy

Why: I know that there have always been similarities between Speedy and Robin, but to me Roy Harper has always been a character of his own, his character went into subjects that robin never did, such as drug addiction, rehabilitation, the pressure of being a single father, losing a limb and the loss of a child. And after all those things he still found a way to rise above and be a hero, even with his cool but crude exterior he’s a good guy to his friends.

3. Donna Troy – Wonder Girl

Why: Now with Donna Troy it’s a little difficult to explain, she’s had so many retcons to her history that at first it was hard for me to understand what her character was all about, it wasn’t till I started ignoring the origin and just read the comics that I realised she was a good character and with her own issues (of course) and history within the DC Universe and at the moment I am liking her current positive and strong personality in the current Titans book with DC Rebirth, so let’s hope DC chose’s not to make her origin too complex like they’ve done before and just let her be a cool superhero as usual.

2. Dick Grayson - Robin

Why: Do I really need a reason to include this guy on the list? Sidekicks began to gain their popularity when this Robin took the stage, a young boy who Batman sees not only as a son, but as a kindred spirit in his war on crime, Dick Grayson is a great character and I’m glad that he went onto be a hero in his own right as Nightwing.

1. Wally West – Kid Flash

Why: Wally West is probably one of my favourite characters in DC and to me is the best sidekick in comics, his positive, upbeat, smart ass attitude worked well with the positive yet emotionally bland (at the time) Barry Allen and when Barry Allen “died” he carried on his legacy and assumed the role of The Flash for more than 20 years even after Barry Allen returned Wally remained The Flash. I always liked rooting for Wally West as despite everything that’s hit him he keeps moving forward, even now in DC Rebirth I’m hoping that he’ll find a way to get people to remember him and whatever battle the DC Universe is heading for I’m sure Wally West will be there, running right into it.

And with that I bid you all farewell for 2 weeks. I’d like to give a thank you to my friend Mick Stockton for suggesting this week’s list and if anyone has any other suggestions for future lists on the website then please leave them in the comments below. Thank You For Reading.
