3 Reasons Why You Should Read My Hero Academia
Hey guys from Planet-M, today I’ve got something interesting for the blog, This one is about a manga series I’ve started reading called My Hero Academia (written by Kohei Horikoshi and illustrated by Hirofumi Neda) and today I’m gonna give you 3 reasons why you should start reading it as well.
Quick warning I will only be covering information from the first, second and third volumes of the manga and Just before I list the reasons I’d like to give a general summary of what the manga is about.
“Izuku Midoriya is an ordinary middle school student in a world where superhero and super powers (which are known as Quirks) are normal everyday things. But he dreams of becoming a hero like his idle All Might, the symbol of piece.
One day when trying to save his childhood bully, Katsuki, from a villain, he is met by All Might, who sees potential in the boy and bestows upon him his Quirk, “One for All”. The story follows Izuku learning to control his new powers while at the U.A. High school, a school to which many heroes are tasked with training the next generations.”
Ok now with that out of the way let’s get started!
The Artwork: Well with any form of visual media you need artwork that looks good, but also unique in its own design aesthetic and that is something that MHA does well in its own right. Right off of the bat in the first few issues we are given a wide variety of characters that are visually interesting in their designs, both in their superhero suits and in their usual attire (and yes I know I’m using character designs from the anime as well, but I couldn't find the original manga designs) and that is good from a visual perspective as it helps people remember who these characters are in some cases what their powers are based on their appearance, even if you can’t remember their names.
The artwork is also not limited by its amount of detail in fact Hirofumi’s artwork is quite versatile whether it be in an action sequence, stylising movement or emphasizing emotion, it can be seen in the art and that also works in the characters designs as you easily identify the characters emotional traits or their “Quirks” through their appearance (some more than others).
It can definitely be seen in the character design of Tenya Iida, his general expression and student and super attire invoke a serious tone and with the short hair that could also give a sense of maturity, props to Kohei Horikoshi and Hirofumi Neda for creating so many great characters.
Good Characterisation Of The Main Character: With the first few volumes of my hero academia the characterisations of all the characters involved is simple for now, but as the story progresses the characters will grow more complex as we go on this journey, because if all the information on the characters was given all at once it would overwhelm the reader and make things difficult to follow, a story always needs time to establish what is the objective, who do we cheer for and who everyone is before going into the goals and backstories of the characters.
This is done well with our protagonist Izuku as from the first volume we have the “under dog” with a positive personality who wants to do good and works towards achieving his goal despite not being as capable as others around him at the moment. But just because his characterisation is currently a simple one doesn’t mean he’s not a good character if anything it makes Izuku more relatable and it gives us a reason to care about what happens to him as the story progresses and as time goes on he will learn and mature much like anyone else.
Izuku not only aspires to be a hero, but he aspires to be like All Might (who in his world is seen as the greatest hero of them all), despite many odds against him, such as when Izuku uses his powers given to him by All Might, it seriously injures him due to lack of proper control and regulation that comes with growing up with powers naturally, this differs him from the rest of the students as he has to learn to properly regulate or the use of his power could have lasting damage, this also shows how selfless Izuku is as he’s willing to risk himself in order to help others and in the end that is the kind of protagonist people want to read about.
A Coherent and Growing Storyline: The start of the story works on the general appeal to the audience while at the same time getting them invested in the main character of the story before anything too complex, this is a good thing because it establishes the status quo and where the main character fits into that.
This then lays the ground work for the future of the story, such as revealing a super villain organisation that wants to kill All Might, this set up a way for Izuku’s character to grow while possibly explaining more about All Might or even the motivations of Izuku’s other class mates and that is what got me more invested in the story by showing there was a dragon to slay, an end goal in mind.
As time goes on I will continue to read this series and hope that it continues to get better, I heavily recommend this series as many people will find it entertaining. Thank You For Reading.
